In ‘Eurotipodes - Colonial Capsize’ a semitransparent horse hangs upside down, merged with a kangaroo in a red colonial landscape. The diaphanous layered landscape reimagines colonial paintings from the State Library, NSW collection, referencing time, ecological and cultural change. Two iconic creatures embedded in mythic Australian folklore are joined, the equine hoofs beating a rhythm onto the landscape. The introduced creatures interwoven in a romantic narrative of country. In this work I am reflecting on what is an ‘Australian’ landscape? The term, ‘Eurotipodes’, is one I created to express my feelings about the Eurocentric interpretation of the world, the notion that the Northern Hemisphere is the right way up and we hang upside down in our opposite ‘Antipodes’.
